Topical Minoxidil: What It Is, How It Works, and What to Expect

Minoxidil 101: Everything You Need to Know About the Topical Version

This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.

Minoxidil is one of the most widely available topical treatments for hair loss. It comes in foam or liquid form and is applied directly to the scalp once or twice a day. Most people know it as Rogaine, but there are many generic versions that work the same way and have the exact same ingredients.

Originally developed as a blood-pressure medication, researchers discovered it also had an interesting “side effect”: study participants had unexpected hair growth! Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels and improving circulation around the hair follicles, helping them stay in the growth, or anagen, phase longer.

What is Minoxidil Used For?

Topical minoxidil is used to treat hair loss in both men and women. It’s most effective for:

  • Androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss) — around hairline, top and crown of the head.

It is also sometimes used in cases of telogen effluvium, particularly chronic telogen effluvium. However, research has typically focused on its use in cases of pattern hair loss, and more research is needed on other conditions.

It is also not meant for complete baldness or scarring alopecia, since it can’t create new follicles where they no longer exist.

Minoxidil Side Effects

Like any topical treatment, minoxidil can cause side effects for some people. Thankfully, they are typically mild.

Common ones include:

  • Scalp irritation

  • Itchiness or flaking

  • Temporary increased shedding (also known as the ‘dread shed’)

Less common, but possible:

  • Unwanted facial hair growth if the product drips or spreads

  • Dizziness or fast heartbeat

You should consult your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

Cost and Availability of Minoxidil

Minoxidil (up to 5% concentration) is available over the counter, making it accessible and relatively affordable.

You’ll find it under brand names like Rogaine, Hims, Hers, Virtue and Keranique.

Other formulas and compounds can go higher in concentration, but are only available by prescription in the United States currently. If you go this route, make sure to only get these from reputable sources.

Minoxidil Use Tips

Consistency is key.

It is typically advised that minoxidil should be applied once or twice daily, depending on the strength and formulation. Missing a day isn’t a big deal, but skipping frequently can reduce effectiveness.

The foam and liquid versions are equally effective, and it is more about personal application preference. It it typically also sold in a 2% or 5% concentration, but 5% has been demonstrated to be the most effective for both men and women.

Minoxidil can be toxic to small children and pets, so do take precautions in the home.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Minoxidil

Does minoxidil regrow hair permanently?
Minoxidil supports existing follicles while you’re using it. If you stop, your hair will gradually regress to where it would naturally be without the minoxidil use.

Can I use minoxidil with other hair growth treatments?
Yes — it’s often part of a combined plan with additional treatments. Always consult a professional before layering products.

How long before I see results?
Most people notice visible improvement within 3–6 months.

Does it work for everyone?
No single treatment works for everyone. Genetics, hormones, and underlying conditions all play a role.
